Closeboard and composite are two of the most popular choices we fit across Cardiff, and they suit different priorities. One is the traditional timber workhorse, the other a modern low maintenance upgrade. Here is a straight comparison to help you decide which is right for your garden.
Closeboard fencing in short
Closeboard, also called feather edge, is built on site from overlapping vertical timber boards fixed to horizontal rails. It is strong, traditional and does a solid job on almost any boundary.
- Lower upfront cost than composite
- Strong and secure, with no gaps to see through
- Can be repaired board by board if damaged
- Needs treating every few years to keep it looking its best
Composite fencing in short
Composite is made from a blend of recycled wood fibre and plastic. It looks like timber but behaves like a modern material, which is why it is growing fast in popularity.
- Almost no maintenance, no treating or painting
- Will not rot, warp or splinter
- Consistent colour that holds for years
- Higher upfront cost than timber
Side by side
| Closeboard | Composite | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher |
| Maintenance | Treat every few years | Almost none |
| Lifespan | Long with upkeep | Very long |
| Look | Traditional timber | Modern, uniform |
| Repairs | Board by board | Panel sections |
Which should you choose
If you want the best value upfront and do not mind treating it occasionally, closeboard is hard to beat and still our most requested fence. If you would rather pay more once and then forget about it for years, composite earns its price in saved maintenance. Plenty of Cardiff gardens use closeboard on the long runs and composite where it is most on show.
